Solid wall cavity fill for food businesses

Commercial Kitchens & Food Premises

Food premises must meet strict construction requirements, including solid walls that don't provide cavities for pests. Foam fill can help achieve this in framed walls.

Check with your local council or health authority early in your project. Our compliance certification is based on AS 4674-2004 for solid wall construction.

Why choose this solution

  • Fills wall cavities

Foam expands to fill the space within framed walls.

  • Standards focused

Our certification is based on AS 4674-2004 solid wall construction.

  • Air sealing

The foam expands into cracks and joins as it's applied, reducing air leakage through the building.

  • Long-lasting performance

Foam adheres to the surface and won't sag or settle the way loose insulation can.

Performance varies with the product, thickness, building and installation. Fire performance is product specific: see our fire performance page.

What is the importance of solid wall construction in food premises?

Solid wall construction serves as an impervious barrier, preventing the entry of pests and ensuring a clean and hygienic environment. It is a critical factor in meeting health and safety standards.

What is the process of cavity wall injection?

The process involves drilling holes at strategic points within the wall cavities and injecting foam in two stages to fill voids and cavities. This ensures thorough coverage and enhances the overall hygiene of the food premises.

What should be considered before the installation process?

Before installation, it is recommended to defer the installation of certain equipment and reinforce wall sheeting by applying sufficient glue and screws, especially when using thinner materials.

What certification and compliance are provided?

Upon completion of the work, a Certificate of Compliance is issued, confirming that the food premises meet necessary standards and regulations. The certification is based on AS 4674-2004 for Solid Wall Construction and complies with ASNZS 1530.0 for heat and smoke release.

What reference documentation should be reviewed?

To have a comprehensive understanding of the standards and requirements, it is advisable to review the Safe Food Australia AS 4674-2004 document and Section J of the BCA. These texts serve as vital reference materials for food premises projects.

Expert Answers

Frequently Asked Spray Foam Questions

What you need to know about foam types, R-values, where spray foam can go, safety and fire performance.

Have a specific project question?

Our team can talk through your substrate, access, climate and the data sheets you need.

Ask Our Technical Team

What is the difference between closed cell and open cell spray foam?

Closed cell foam cures into a hard, rigid layer with a higher R-value per millimetre, and it isn't water permeable. Open cell foam cures soft and flexible, expands to fill cavities and helps dampen sound, but it is water permeable and is used for interior applications. We recommend the right system for your building and climate.

What R-value can spray foam achieve?

We install spray foam from R1 to R8, depending on the product and thickness. As a guide, our closed cell foam reaches R2.08 at 50mm, and our open cell foam reaches R1.3 at 50mm and R3.9 at 150mm. Your climate, the area being insulated and the build type determine the right target.

Where can spray foam insulation be used?

Common areas include underfloors, crawl spaces, roofs, ceilings, walls, under slabs, sheds and workshops. We also insulate commercial buildings, cool rooms, food premises, mining camps, modular buildings, shipping containers, truck bodies, tanks and pipework.

Is spray foam safe once it has cured?

Once cured, the foam is non-hazardous and free of formaldehyde and asbestos. It must be installed by licensed applicators wearing PPE while it is airborne, so occupants stay clear during application and return when the installer advises it is safe.

Is spray foam insulation fire rated?

Spray foam is generally classified as a combustible material under the NCC, and fire performance varies by product and configuration. Some products have been tested to AS1530.3 or classified under AS/NZS 3837, but those results apply only to the tested product and don't by themselves demonstrate fire resistance or NCC compliance. See our fire performance page and ask us for the data sheet for your project.

Can I spray foam my property myself?

We recommend professional installation. Correct mixing, pass thickness and safety controls all affect how the foam performs, and experienced applicators have the equipment and training to get them right.

Can you paint spray foam insulation?

In many projects, yes. Painting can suit branding or interior design schemes, but the right approach depends on the foam and the space. Talk to us before you paint, so the finish suits the product and the area.

How much does spray foam insulation cost?

It depends on the area, the product and the thickness needed to reach your R-value. Contact us for a free, no-obligation quote tailored to your project.
